DHAKA: Main opposition BNP’s senior joint secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Thursday called upon the countrymen to make the 27 June hartal a success for what he said saving country’s independence and sovereignty.

“The government will not allow any creative man to live. There is no alternative to movement. Students and the mass people have to move together to oust the government,” the BNP leader said during a demonstration at Muktangon in the city.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of the party, organized the demo and rally with its President sultan Salauddin Tuku in the chair in protest against the June 21st attack on its leaders-activists at Dhaka University.

Activists of Chhatra League, the student associate of the ruling Awami League, allegedly attacked JCD activists while they were trying to enter Madhu’s canteen on June 21, leaving at least 30 JCD workers injured.

Following the incident, JCD announced a three-day protest programme that culminated into today’s demonstrations.

He blamed the government for taking recourse to “fascism through oppressing the opposition instead of solving people’s problems”.

The BNP leader also claimed that the Awami League killed thousands of people after the liberation by raising ‘Rakkhi Bahini’ and destroyed the aspirations cherished by people during the liberation war.

Joint secretary-general of BNP Amanulla Aman, organizing secretary Fazlul Haq Milan and secretary for student affairs Shaheed Uddin Chowdhury Annie, among others, attended the demo.
