Australia-England two old and traditional rivals whenever they meet in cricket it gives the flavor of ashes. Yesterday at the iconic Narendra Modi stadium vanquished England played their best match of CWC 2023. Yet they lost by 33 runs and stayed at the bottom of the points table. Winning the toss and opting to bowl they could restrict Australia to 286 All Out. But their batting woos continued as they got bundled out for 253.

For the reigning champions CWC 2023 will go down in their cricket history as one of the worst. For their consistent performance before the tournament, they were among the hot favorites. But losing 6 of their 7 matches England is now languishing at the bottom of the 10 team’s world Cup. Australia on the other hand won 5 matches on the trot after losing the first two. They have all but qualified for the semifinals. With two matches against Afghanistan and Bangladesh Aussies are expected to feature in the semifinals.

England won the toss and put Australia to bat. English bowlers for the first time in the world cup bowled with a purpose. Two prolific Australian batsmen Travis Head and David Warner were sent back to the dug out with only 38 on the board. However, Steve Smith (44) and Marnas Labuchagne (72) retrieved the innings with 75 runs 3rd wicket partnership. But wickets kept tumbling till Marcus Stonis (44) in the late middle order and Adam Zampa (29) at the tail wagged. Australia posted competitive 286 all out in 49.3 overs. Chris Woakes (4/54), Adil Rashid (2/38) and Mark Wood (2/70) were outstanding on the day.

English innings also started disastrously with Jonny Bairstow getting out for a duck on the very first ball of the innings by Mitchell Starc. English innings got further blow when Joe Root was also dismissed early Starc for 13. However, David Malan (50) and Ben Stokes (64) batting sensibly resurrected the innings added 84 runs for the 3rd wicket. But English middle order against collapsed against persistent good bowling of Adam Zampa (3/21), Josh Hazelwood (2/49). Pat Cummins (2/49) and Mitchell Starc (2/66).

England getting bundled for 253 suffered their 6th loss in 7 matches. Australia with 5 wins from 7 matches have all but secured their berth in the semifinals. English positions at the bottom of the points tables looks humiliating as they are reigning champions of both the formats of white ball cricket. English cricket think will have to carry out extensive soul searching like the did after early exit from  2015 world cup.
