Argentinean football icon Angel Di Mara, affectionately known as "El Fideo," has retired from the Argentina national team as a Copa America champion.

With a legacy filled with both triumphs and heartbreaks, Di Mara leaves the Albiceleste, capping off a remarkable 16-year international career with back-to-back continental titles.

"It was my dream to retire from the national team like this. Argentina is my love and my country. Thank you," Di Mara expressed in his farewell message.

The decisive moment came in the 113th minute when Golden Boot winner Lautaro Martnez scored, securing La Albiceleste's second consecutive Copa America title after a grueling, physical match at Hard Rock Stadium.

The 36-year-old winger made significant contributions to Argentina across four World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022), playing a crucial role in the team that reached the final in Brazil in 2014 and ultimately clinched the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

In Copa América competitions, Di Mara experienced the agony of near victories, finishing as a runner-up in 2015 and 2016, before achieving glory in 2021.

His decisive goal against Brazil at the Maracan£ Stadium secured the long-awaited continental trophy. Di Mara then helped Argentina defend their title in 2024.

Beyond his senior team accomplishments, Di Mara's impact on Argentine football began early. He was part of the squad that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2007 and earned a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

In his international career, Di Mara played approximately 144 matches and scored 31 goals. His honors include the 2022 World Cup, a runner-up finish in the 2014 World Cup, the 2021 Copa America, and a bronze medal in the 2019 Copa America. He also celebrated victory in the 2022 UEFA Cup of Nations.

For Colombia, it was a case of what might have been for the tournament's most impressive team. For Argentina, it was a fairytale ending for a side that has mastered the art of winning big finals. With back-to-back Copa América titles and the World Cup trophy in their possession, Argentina's recent achievements mark a historic high point for the national team.
