India 46 all out against New Zealand, lowest Test score at home

India were bowled out for 46 – their lowest Test total at home – during the first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru today.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss on Day 2 following a washout the previous day, India captain Rohit Sharma was the first to depart. Rohit was cleaned up by Tim Southee before a procession of wickets followed.

In Shubman Gill’s absence, India moved Virat Kohli up to No. 3 from his regular position at No. 4. Kohli fell for an eight-ball duck before they lost four more wickets before Lunch.

India were left six down at 34 at Lunch, their sixth-lowest total at the fall of the sixth wicket. India lost R Ashwin, the seventh batter, on the first ball of the second session as Kiwi pacers Willam O’Rourke and Matt Henry wreaked havoc on the hosts’ order.

Though Rohit Sharma’s went past India’s lowest-ever Test total of 36 from 2020 in Adelaide, the poor display marked their lowest Test total at home since the 75 all out against West Indies in 1987 in Delhi.

As many as five batters – Kohli, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadej and R Ashwin – fell for ducks, making it the second-most in an Indian Test innings.
