Bangladesh began their two-match Bashundhara Group FIFA Tier-1 International friendlies with a disappointing 0-1 loss to the Maldives at a packed Bashundhara Kings Arena in the Bashundhara Sports Complex on Wednesday (Nov 13).
Maldives midfielder Ali Fasir found the net in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a free-kick assist from teammate Hamza Mohamed, who delivered the ball into the box where Fasir was left unmarked.
Bangladesh's attack, led by forwards Foysal Ahmed Fahim, Rakib Hossain, Sheikh Morsalin, and midfielder Sohel Rana, dominated from the start but squandered at least 23 scoring opportunities from attacks, counter-attacks, and set pieces throughout the game.
Maldives’ standout players, goalkeeper Hussain Shareef and midfielder Mohamed Irufaan, thwarted Bangladesh's relentless efforts, with only Sohel’s long-range shot in the 44th minute coming close, but it deflected off the post.
Head coach Javier Cabrera made three changes from his previous squad in the Bhutan friendly on September 8, bringing in forward Rakib Hossain, midfielder Syed Shah Quazem Kirmane, and defender Shakil Ahad Topu for Wednesday’s match.
