MS Dhoni prepares for another IPL season

As the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) unfolds, MS Dhoni remains one of the tournament’s biggest attractions. Despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, the legendary cricketer continues to be a key presence in the league, entering his 18th consecutive IPL season.

Turning 44 in July, Dhoni has spent 16 of his IPL seasons with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), cementing his status as one of the tournament’s most enduring players. While he is the oldest competitor this year, he is yet to surpass the records of Brad Hogg and Pravin Tambe, the oldest players in IPL history. Despite speculation about his retirement, CSK retained him for the 2025 season, leveraging the retention clause in the IPL mega auction.

Dhoni’s impact extends beyond longevity. With 5,243 runs in the IPL, he ranks sixth on the all-time scorers list, boasting a batting average superior to both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. His finishing ability, signature "helicopter shot," and composed demeanor under pressure have defined his career. Additionally, his wicketkeeping record of 180 dismissals remains unmatched.

As CSK’s long-time captain, Dhoni holds the record for the most matches as skipper (210) and most wins (123), leading the team to five IPL titles. He also captained India to three ICC trophies: the T20 World Cup (2007), ODI World Cup (2011), and Champions Trophy (2013).

Though age has impacted his playing style, Dhoni remains a valuable asset, both as a mentor and a game-changer. For CSK, an IPL without Dhoni is simply unimaginable.
