Liverpool secured vital points in the Merseyside derby, defeating rivals Everton and inching ever closer to the Premier League title.

With just 13 points needed from their remaining 24, Jurgen Klopp's side is now on the verge of clinching a record-equalling 20th top-flight championship.

Although Everton's deep defensive line caused frustration for Liverpool, the Reds eventually broke the deadlock thanks to a brilliant individual effort from Diogo Jota.

The Portuguese forward had been relatively quiet throughout the match but sprang into action, collecting a clever backheel from Luis Diaz. Jota then showcased quick footwork, evading defenders before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper.

Despite initial concerns over Diaz's position during the buildup, replays showed he was in an offside position but was not considered to be interfering with play, allowing the goal to stand.

Earlier in the game, controversy stirred as Everton’s James Tarkowski escaped a red card after a reckless challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. Tarkowski slid in to win the ball but followed through with his studs catching Mac Allister on the knee.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) opted not to upgrade the yellow card to a red, and Liverpool’s resulting free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai narrowly missed the target. Mohamed Salah also came close, heading straight at Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Everton’s Beto caused some concern for Liverpool’s defense, having a goal ruled out for offside after a powerful run past Virgil van Dijk. Later, Beto again got the better of Van Dijk but was unlucky to hit the post when through on goal against goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Liverpool’s pressure continued in the second half, with Ryan Gravenberch forcing a save from Pickford with a powerful long-range shot. However, it was Jota’s 56th-minute goal that ultimately secured the win for the Reds, keeping their title hopes alive.
