Spanish football star Aitana Bonmati has been admitted to hospital in Madrid after being diagnosed with viral meningitis, just days before the start of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.

The 27-year-old midfielder, a two-time Ballon d’Or and consecutive FIFA Women’s Player of the Year winner, was absent from Spain’s 3-1 friendly victory over Japan in Leganés on Friday. She later posted an image from her hospital bed on Instagram, watching her teammates in action.

Bonmati had missed training on Thursday before being taken to hospital the following day, accompanied by medical personnel from the Spanish Football Federation. The federation later confirmed the diagnosis.

National team coach Montse Tomé acknowledged public concern but sought to reassure fans: “Meningitis can sound frightening, but it’s under control. Aitana is an essential part of our team, and we’ll wait for her as long as necessary.”

Spain are set to begin their Euro 2025 campaign against Portugal in Bern on Thursday. The tournament opens in Switzerland on Wednesday.

Bonmati, who has netted 30 goals in 78 appearances for the national side, played a pivotal role in Spain’s triumph at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the Nations League title last year.

Meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, can pose serious health risks if not treated promptly. However, the viral form is generally less severe than bacterial meningitis and often resolves within a week with rest and medical care.
