Amateur golf event begins Thursday

DHAKA: Amateur golfers from hosts Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Sri Lanka will showcase their talent during the 53rd edition of the Amateur Golf Championship being played from May 15 at Royal Palm Golf and Country Club (RPGCC), in Lahore of Pakistan.

Pakistan Golf Federation Secretary Brigadier Nayyar Afzal said that the golf stadium is in good shape and the event will be a big hit.

“The four participating countries, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran and Sri Lanka, will add excitement to the event besides making it equally tough for our home golfers,” said Afzal.

“The golf course is in good shape and the presence of foreign players will establish the status of the event as a grand golfing competition.

“Pakistan being the host country has entered three teams, while a single team from each country will participate, constituting a total of 89 men and 10 women.”

In regards to the format of the championship, Afzal highlighted that the events include the National Men’s Amateur Championship which is an individual competitive golf event.

The second one is the International Men’s Team Match in which each invited country and Pakistan will be eligible to enter a team of two players, while the Inter-Association Team Match will also be part of the championship between the four golf associations of Pakistan.
