DAMBULLA: Young Indian batsman Virat Kohli was on Thursday fined 15 percent of his match-fee for showing dissent at an umpire`s decision during a tri-series match.

Kohli stood his ground after he was given out caught by wicket-keeper Gareth Hopkins off seamer Andy McKay for eight runs in his team`s 105-run victory over New Zealand in Dambulla on Wednesday.

"After being given out in the sixth over, the player stood his ground and looked at the umpire for a considerable time before eventually leaving the middle," International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.

"This was considered to be a show of dissent, a fact accepted by the player himself. Because Kohli pleaded guilty and accepted the proposed sanction there was no need for a formal hearing."

The 21-year-old has scored 1,090 runs in 33 one-day internationals with two hundreds and eight half-centuries.

Match referee Alan Hurst said: "Accepting the umpires` decisions is part and parcel of playing cricket and on this occasion Virat clearly showed dissent when he had been given out."

India play Sri Lanka in the tri-series final in Dambulla on Saturday.
