Colombia Beats Peru after Penalty Shootout

DHAKA: Colombia progressed to the next stage of the Copa America after a beating Peru 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the second quarterfinal in New Jersey.

The game went to penalties as both teams were locked at 0-0 after 90 minutes.

Colombia captain, James Rodriguez stepped up to bury the first penalty, Telesur reports on Saturday (June 18).

From then on, Colombia was cynical with Juan Cuadrado, Dayro Moreno and Sebastian Perez all scoring from the spot.

But Peru kicked itself out of the game when Miguel Trauco and Christian Cueva both missed, making it 4-2 to Colombia.

Colombia has had the majority of possession and shots on goal throughout normal time. Both teams had a number of promising attacks but were not able to convert their opportunities.

If quarterfinal matches end in a draw after 90 minutes, there will be no extra time, and games will instead go straight to penalties.

Five of the last seven games between Colombia and Peru in the Copa America have ended as draws.

Peru had beaten Colombia in the previous three Copa America encounters.

Colombia will play in a Copa America semifinal for the first time since 2004. They will play the winner of Mexico vs. Chile tomorrow night. Argentina and Venezuela will play off on the opposite side of the draw.
