NZ beat Pakistan in first test by 8-wicket

DHAKA: New Zealand beat visiting Pakistan by eight wickets in the first test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch and took 1-0 lead in the three-match test series on Sunday (November 20).

Host captain Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bowl first after the first day of the match was washed away by persistent rain.

Pakistan managed to score a meager 133-run losing all wickets in the first innings. Misbah-ul-Haq, Rahat Ali and Sami Aslam scored 31, 20 and 19 runs respectively.

Debutant Kiwi bowler Colin de Granhomme picked up six wickets giving away only 41-run from 15.5 while TG Southee and TA Boult took two wickets each.

In response, the hosts were all-out scoring 200-run and took a sizeable 67-run lead. Debutant opening batsmen Jeet Raval hit 55-run while Henry Nicolls and Colin de Grandhomme amassed 30 and 29-run respectively.

In their second innings, Pakistan scored 171-run and set a 108-run target for the hosts. Sohail Khan gathered 40-run. Besides, Azhar Ali and Babar Azam took 31 and 29 runs.

Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner picked up three wickets each while de Grandhomme took one wicket.

New Zealand chased down the target losing two wickets. Kane Williamson hit 61-run while Jeet Raval amassed 36*.

M Amir and Azhar Ali picked up one wicket each.

Debutant Colin de Grandhomme was adjudged the player of the match. He is only the fourth New Zealander to be Player of the Match on Test debut.
