DHAKA: New Zealand have taken 1-0 lead in the two-test series by beating visiting Bangladesh in the first match by seven wickets at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Monday (January 16).

The hosts chased down a target of 217-run at a rate of 5.47 run per over in the fifth day losing three wickets, thanks to Kane Williamson’s unbeaten ton (104) off 89-ball.

Ross Taylor provided an excellent supporting hand with his first half-century (60) in the innings after the eye surgery.

Earlier in the fifth day morning, Mominul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan resumed batting with Bangladesh’s the overnight score of 66/3. The visitors, however, lost all wickets scoring 160-run in 57.5-over in the third innings, setting a target of 217-run for the Kiwis.

Sabbir Rahman, Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque scored 50, 36, 25 and 23 runs respectively.

Boult picked up three wickets while Santner and Wagner took two wickets each. Besides, Southee took one wicket.

Earlier, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and invited the visitors to bat first. Bangladesh scored 595-run losing eight wickets. Shakib Al Hasan hit his first ever double ton (217) while Tiger captain Mushfiqur Rahim took 159-run.

In response, the Kiwis managed to score 539-run losing all wickets, thanks to Tom Latham who scored 177-run. Bangladesh took a lead of 56-run in the first innings.

Latham was adjudged the player of the match.
