Modric starred as Croatia came from behind to knock England out at the semi-final stage.

Kieran Trippier had put the Three Lions ahead in the fifth minute before Ivan Perisic levelled in the second half.

Mario Mandzukic’s strike in extra-time sealed it as Croatia played an additional 30 minutes for the third time in a row.

Many had predicted England would have the advantage as time went on because of that but Modric has criticised the media for those thoughts.

“English journalists, pundits from television, they underestimated Croatia tonight and that was a huge mistake,” Modric told ITV.
