Buoyant Bangladesh avalanched West Indies in milestone setting Dhaka test win crushing them to an innings and 184 runs defeat (first even test win by an innings).
West Indies was crushed to their lowest 111 runs in the first innings responding to Bangladesh mammoth total of 508. Asked to follow on they could master only 213 in the second innings. Bangladesh comprehensively white washed visitors in two match test series. They won the first test in Chottogram by 64 runs. Both the tests were completed within three days. Youthful Mehidy Miraj starred with yet another 10 wickets haul 12/117 bettering his own record of 12/ 159 which he recorded against England in his debut series. He equaled his captain Shakib al Hasan in taking two 10 wickets haul in test cricket for Bangladesh. The white wash must have tasted sweet for Bangladesh having suffered similar humiliation against the same opposition about 5 months back while touring the Caribbean islands. It is one of the white wash accomplished in a two test series where all 40 wickets of the opposition were captured by 4 spinners.
The fate of the test and the series was curbed by stumps of day two when replying to Bangladesh first innings of 508 visitors were reduced to 75/5. The four pronged Bangladesh spinners were relentless and irresistible. On third morning Bangladesh required only 51 minutes in bundling out the visitors to 111 their lowest against Bangladesh in test. None but Hetemeyer (39) and Dorwich (37) showed any stomach to fight. Mehidy mesmerized taking 7/58. Shakib took the other 3 wickets giving away only 27 runs. Taijul and Naeem were not required much to bowl. Bangladesh enforced the follow-on. The same manner of pavilion direction one way traffic continued. Once again Shakib and Mehidy led the way sending back openers within the wink of an eye. This time Taijul and Naeem joined the hunt as visitors were soon reduced to 96/6. Courtesy to flamboyant Hetmeyer striking 9 sixes in his brave 93 West Indies managed scoring 213. Bangladesh won its first ever test match by an Innings and 184 runs. It was a day when 15 West Indian wickets tumbled. Mehidy taking 5/59 took his match tally to 12/117. He took 9 wickets on the day just one less than Pakistani leg spinner taking 10 wickets against New Zealand in UAE in the recent past.
Bangladesh in its only innings scored 508 when all 11 batsmen scored 10 or above. It was only the 14 th time it happened in the long history of test cricket. On a wicket where entire w West Indies team could last for 36.4 overs in the first innings Mahmudullah alone batted for 40 0vers in his epic 136. This was his third test century, his consecutive second in Dhaka Test. Debutant opening batsman Shadman batting like champion impressed all with his 76. Shakib contributed with a masterful 80 and Liton Das batting at number 8 scored a breezy 54. Even tail enders Taijul (29) and Naeem (12*) contributed.
This two test series was a sharp contrast to another two test series played between the two sides in West Indies only 5 months back. On fast bouncing seaming wickets Bangladesh was crushed to series white washed failing to score even 200 in any of the four innings. Here in Bangladesh visitors failed in decoding the mystery of Bangladeshi spinners of spinning wickets turning and gripping. It showed how circumstances alter cases.
Mehidy for his brilliant bowling was adjudged player of the match. Shakib was declared player of the series.
In Dhaka test Bangladesh appeared with 4 front line spinners two matured left arm spinners and two meritorious off spinners. There was no genuine pace bowler for the first time. Many compared this with India playing Prasanna, Bedi, Venktaraghawan and Chandrashekhar appearing for India under Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi. These spinners were not astute all rounder like Shakib. Neither could they bat like Taiul, Miraj or Naeem.
Anyway, Bangladesh has completed its test assignment for the year 2018. They will now contest in ODI and T20 series with heads high. Early next year Bangladesh is due to visit New Zealand. Wickets and condition are very different there. Bangladesh has to play at least two if not three quality pacers and batsmen have to deal with great pace attack on seaming and windy conditions.
