England set South Africa 312-run target

DHAKA: Hosts England have set a 312-run target for South Africa in World Cup opener against South Africa at the Oval, London on Thursday (May 30).

Ben Stokes, Eoin Morgan powered England to 311/8 in their stipulated 50-over.

The brilliant innings by Ben Stokes came to an end with 89 off 79 balls. Besides, JJ Roy took 54 off 53 balls, JE Root 51 off 59 balls, EJG Morgan (c), 57 off 60 balls.

L Ngidi picked up 3 wickets while Imran Tahir and K Rabada bagged 2 wickets each for South Africa.

Earlier in the day, South Africa won the toss and invited England to bat first.

This is the first time 'new' England are batting first at the Oval. They've chased in five other games since Apr 2015, won four, and the fifth time, made 365 chasing 398 vs New Zealand.

If South Africa manages to reach their target, it will be the fourth highest successful run chase in Cricket World cup history.
