Bangladesh’s Ruman Shana wins gold at Asia Cup Archery

DHAKA: Bangladesh’s Ruman Shana has won gold medal against Shi Zhenqi of China in the men's singles recurve category at the third leg of the 2019 Asia Cup in the Philippines.

The 24-year-old archer from Bangladesh beat China's Zhenqi Shi by 7-3 set points in the final of the archery event.

After a 28-28 draw in the first set, Ruman lost in the second set 26-29. But, he retained to edge in the third leg 29-25 and in the fourth 28-25 and edged the final set 28-27 to seal the win.

Ruman, earlier, collected bronze medal at the Hyundai World Archery Championships in ’s-Hertogenbosch earlier this summer.

Shana qualified second at the tournament and comfortably made his way through the bracket.

Ruman’s bronze in’s-Hertogenbosch was the first world championship medal in history for an archer from Bangladesh. It also qualified the country its first quota place at the Olympic Games. 

The Southeast Asian Games are held every two years. Archery has been on the programme at each edition since 1977 with the exception of 1997. 

The archery competitions at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games is scheduled to take place on 5-9 December at the same venue as this Asia Cup tournament.
