DHAKA: Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has cut down Short Message Service (SMS) charge to highest 50 paisa.

For international SMS, the charge would be maximum Tk 2.

Following the latest decision by the watchdog on the telecom sector, the mobile operators of the country will not be able to charge higher than the above rates for domestic and overseas messaging respectively.

Many of the operators allegedly charge Tk 2 for inland SMS.

According to the BTRC, the rate in Bangladesh is much higher compared to many of the countries of the world, which decelerates Bangladesh’s haulage on the fast-moving global information superhighway.

“Now the mobile operators will have to readjust their rates once they are notified,” a BTRC source said.

SMS is the text communications service component of phone or a mobile communications system, which is the most widely used data application in the world.
