Propaganda on against PM on social media

The ministries and authorities concerned seem failed to address the character assassination of people of different classes as evil doers continue to post unhealthy contents in absence of laws.

Caring a hoot to the government’s inaction, such heinous acts are even being carried out against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other members of Bangabandhu family through social platforms, including facebook, youtube and other media.

A minister wishing not to be named claims that the facebook authorities hardly respond to the government’s request for having user information citing public privacy policy.

Sources dealing with information technology say that evil doers with the help of the virtual positioning network make posts through different names with different locations.

As a result, none will be able to track identity of the account holder or revealing the geographical locations, they say, urging the government to enact a law like General Data Production Regulation of the European Union.

Regarding the malicious posts on social media, Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said that the government monitors the contents on facebook and other platforms on a regular basis and sends requests for user having detail information on such accounts almost every day.

“We’re monitoring the anti-state activities on social media. The nicks (accounts) behind the propaganda against the Prime Minister and other cabinet members are under our scan. However, we can’t take action against that user due to lack of information. Facebook or Google merely share data with the government. We send request for information almost every day but they hardly respond,” Jabbar said.

The Awami League-led government has been asking the authorities of facebook and google to set up offices in Bangladesh, but the authorities of the two giant companies are yet to turn up.

Many say that such a situation has been created as facebook and youtube do not have any office in Dhaka.

Considering the issue as an opportunity, vested quarters have been patronising those wrongdoers to spread rumours against the top brass of the government in a bid to catch fish in troubled waters.

Sources say that the anti-government people hire those groups to spread propagandas against the ruling party to defame the government and the country as well.

Experts say there is no room for spreading such rumours in many developed countries, including the USA.

Even, Americans cannot write indiscriminately on social sites against their President.

Against the backdrop, taking the democratic practice into consideration, a quarter has been spreading ugly rumours against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her family members in the name of freedom of speech.

Besides this, a section of people uses social media for character assassination of targeted persons. If they have dispute with any organisation or any specific person, they use social media to spread rumours and false propaganda against the person or organisation.

They used to circulate distorted pictures and videos with fake information and misled people about the government. Such fabricated information is being spread to confuse citizens of the country.

Intelligence sources say that anti-liberation elements have been spending huge amount of money on carrying out the propagandas against the government through social sites.

They blame a lack of censorship in social media for mindless and indiscriminate uploading and publishing information, pictures and videos by using fake IDs.

Sayed Nasirullah, additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Cyber Crime Investigation, CTTC at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said police had been working on all social media, including TikTok and Likee.

“We are in discussion with the authorities of TikTok, Likee and others apps to run these platforms in a healthy way. A policy is needed to determine what kind of content will be in these platforms and what kind of content will not be there,” he said.

“If anyone becomes a victim of defamation or harassment of any kind, inform law enforcement agency immediately. Action must be taken against the culprits,” he added.
