Govt approves import of eggs from India

The government on Sunday (September 18) approved the import of eggs from neighboring India in an effort to stabilize the fluctuating local egg market.

The commerce ministry gave approval to four firms to import one crore eggs each.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Commerce Haider Ali confirmed the matter to Banglanews today (September 18).

He said that in the initial phase Ministry of Commerce approved the import of eggs to four organizations and imported eggs will be sold at Tk 12 per piece at the retail level -- the rate fixed by the government.

“Imported eggs are expected to arrive within a week of opening the Letter of Credit (LC), the process of which will start in a few days,” he added.

According to sources at the ministry said that, as the country requires four crore eggs a day the government will monitor if the market is stable after the import and take further decisions considering the market situation.

On September 14, the government fixed the price of eggs at Tk 12 per piece at the retail level amid a price hike of the essential protein source.
