Debapriya Bhattacharya, who led the committee behind the White Paper on Bangladesh's economy, has said the interim government has increased value-added tax (VAT) "inconsiderately".
"We are astonished by how carelessly VAT has been raised," he said during his opening remarks at the symposium 'White Paper and Thereafter: Economic Management, Reforms, and National Budget' held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) today (Jan 18).
A distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Debapriya argued that any government seeking effective tax collection should gradually shift its focus toward direct taxes.
However, he said, "We have not seen any plan to enhance direct tax collection."
As the convener of the Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, he also highlighted the absence of a strategy to address individuals with Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) who fail to pay taxes.
This approach prioritizes indirect taxation while neglecting direct taxes, which is concerning, he added.
Debapriya also said the government needs to hold economic discussions centered on the upcoming budget. The growth rate and investment in the private sector have decreased, while employment problems exist.
Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin and BIDA Executive Chairman Ashiq Chowdhury were present at the event.
