Half-day petrol pump strike disrupts fuel supply across Bangladesh

Petrol pump owners and tank lorry operators across Bangladesh enforced a half-day strike on Sunday (May 25), demanding the fulfillment of 10-point demands, including an increase in fuel sales commissions and regulatory reforms.

The strike, observed from 6am to 2pm, was enforced by the Bangladesh Petrol Pump and Tank Lorry Owners Unity Council.

It resulted in the suspension of fuel extraction, transportation, and distribution throughout the country.

However, essential services — including fuel supplies for Hajj and international flights, ambulances, fire services, and police-designated pumps — remained operational.

Among the demands are — a 7 percent commission on fuel sales, simplified license renewal procedures for tanker drivers, and an end to illegal direct fuel sales bypassing registered dealers.

The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) convened a meeting on Saturday morning in a bid to resolve the standoff and address the council’s concerns.
