Minister expresses concern over stocks fall

DHAKA: Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Saturday expressed his concern over the fall of country’s capital market.

“The capital market did not rise once fall. All of us, including the governor of the Bangladesh Bank, will have to find out reasons behind the stock market volatility,” he said.

The planning minister was addressing the second session of a two-day conference on ‘Macro and Financial Policy’ organized by Bangladesh Economic Forum (BEF) at a city hotel.

Mustafa said, “The contribution of the stock market to Bangladesh economy is not a matter to deny. But our problem is that when our market falls down it hardly rises again.”

The ruling Awami League lawmaker said, “If the capital market at other countries collapses, it becomes automatically okay.”

BB Governor Dr Atiur Rahman, former BB governor Saleh Uddin Ahmed, BB chief economist Hasan Zaman, United Nations senior advisor Hamid Rashid, Centre for Policy and Dialogue chairman Rehman Sobhan were among others present at the function.
