SC asks Jamuna Bank DMD to surrender

DHAKA: Appellate Division of the Supreme Court asked Deputy Managing Director (DMD) of Jamuna Bank Limited Mozammel Hossain to surrender before the court.

Vacation Bench Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Tuesday afternoon after hearing of a petition of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Earlier, the suspended Jamuna Bank DMD freed on July 22 after getting bail from the High Court.

Mozammel Hossain was jailed for his alleged involvement in helping terry towel producer Bismillah Group to get Tk 990 crore loan illegally in between 2010 and 2012.

With assistance from law enforcement agencies, the ACC arrested the bank official from capital’s Segunbagicha area on January 20.

On November 3 last year, the ACC filed 12 cases against 53 officials of five banks and the Bismillah Group under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012 for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement of funded loans worth over Tk 990 crore.

The list of accused include 13 people of Bismillah Group, five officials of Jamuna Bank, and others from Janata, Prime, Premier and Shahjalal Islami banks.

According to the first information report, Bismillah Group, in association with the bank officials, had embezzled the money through loans against trust receipts using names of fake foreign buyers, and laundered the money abroad.
