DHAKA:  Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Chairman of the country's leading industrial and business conglomerate Bashundhara Group, on Wednesday (December 26) said bad loan must be stopped aiming to curb default loan to one percent.

The eminent business personality of the country was addressing as chief guest at an inaugural function of the Female Branch of South Bangla Agriculture & Commerce Bank Limited (SBAC), in Bashundhara Residential Area in the city.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan also urged bankers to collect all information of the loan seekers as images of good borrowers are now being tarnished because of loan defaulters.

During his speech, the Bashundhara Group chairman said “If the process of default and bad loans is strictly checked, the country’s economy will be much better. The country's businessmen will be very motivated then. If bad loan is stopped, defaults loan will fall to 1 percent. Previously, the interest rate of loan was 15-16 percent. Now it may be down to 9-10-11 percent”.

Expressing his delightfulness for naming after the branch of SBAC Bank as Female Branch, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan also said, “Half of our total population is women. There are millions of male entrepreneurs in the country. I hope that this branch of South Bangla Bank will be an example of women entrepreneur”.

The Bashundhara Group owner also said, “The more women entrepreneurs will be emerged, the country will step forward. We are all working for the country. There has been vast development in the economy as 60 banks are running in the country. The banking sector is keeping the biggest contribution to the country's economic development”.

SBAC Bank chairman SM Amjad Hossain, in his special guest speech, urged the audience to do business with the South Bangla Bank.

Among others, Bangladesh Pratidin Editor Naem Nizam and Kaler Kantho Editor Imdadul Haque Milon also addressed the function.

SBAC Bank Deputy Managing Director Tarikul Islam chowdhury, senior officials of Bashundhara Group were, among others, at the programme.

South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank Limited is incorporated in Bangladesh as a banking company in 2013. The Female Branch kicked off its operation as its 74th branch.
