The government plans to establish a separate university for seven government colleges in the capital, with "July 36 University" as a proposed name.
A committee led by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor SM Faiz has proposed this name.
The final decision will depend on student opinions.
Professor SM Faiz and three other committee members, including Education Adviser Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud, held a meeting On Thursday (January 30), where the name was suggested.
Professor SM Faiz told the media that among several options, "July 36 University" stood out to them. The education adviser also appreciated the name. However, the final decision will be based on student preferences.
The seven government colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College.
Following student protests, Dhaka University (DU) announced on Monday that the seven colleges would no longer be affiliated with DU. Starting from the 2024-25 academic year, new students will not be admitted under DU.
