Students of Government Titumir College, who had been demonstrating for their demands, have ended their protest after the government pledged to address their concerns within a week.
The decision came after a meeting between the students and representatives from the Ministry of Education on Monday night.
The protesting students, who had staged a hunger strike, ended their demonstration by drinking juice offered by the college principal, Professor Shipra Rani Mondal.
Earlier in the day, they had blocked the Mohakhali level crossing in the capital, causing disruptions to both road and rail traffic.
The government deployed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Mohakhali on Monday to maintain law and order as students of Government Titumir College continued their protest for the third consecutive day, demanding recognition of the institution as an independent university.
The protesting students blocked the Mohakhali rail crossing, worsening traffic congestion and causing severe disruptions to commuters. Four platoons of BGB were stationed in and around the area in the afternoon to prevent untoward incidents.
Earlier in the day, students staged a demonstration at the level crossing around 3:40pm, halting rail communication. They also blocked the Mohakhali-Gulshan road, bringing traffic to a standstill. The protest began at 12:30pm, with students setting up bamboo barricades at the college gate.
As part of the movement, six students have been on hunger strike for six days at the college’s main entrance. By 4:45pm, the blockade was still in effect, though emergency vehicles, including ambulances, were allowed to pass.
