Abu Sadik Kayem, vice-presidential candidate from the Shibir-backed United Student Alliance panel in the ongoing Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, has alleged that candidates affiliated with Chhatra Dal violated the electoral code of conduct.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday (Sept 9) after casting his vote at Udayan Higher Secondary School centre, Kayem said his panel adhered strictly to the guidelines issued by the university administration, which had prohibited the setting up of campaign desks near polling stations and the distribution of voter slips within 100 metres of the centres.
He said, “We complied with those instructions. However, this morning we observed that a particular student organisation had set up a desk in violation of these rules and was actively distributing slips to students within the restricted area. Several Chhatra Dal candidates were involved in this activity. We call on all contenders to respect the electoral guidelines.”
Appealing to all candidates to act responsibly, Kayem said, “This election holds historic importance. We want it to reflect the ideals of the martyrs who envisioned a democratic and just student union. I urge the Election Commission to take appropriate measures against those violating the code.”
Kayem also recalled recent political mobilisation against authoritarianism. “Back in July, we stood united against fascism, setting aside our individual identities. From Dhaka University, we aim to build an inclusive and just Bangladesh. This election must stand as a model of democratic practice.”
Highlighting the broader national significance of the poll, he added, “The entire country is watching us. We must send a positive message through this election by behaving responsibly and upholding the democratic values we seek to represent.”
He concluded with a hopeful note, expressing confidence that DU students would place their trust in the United Student Alliance. “The voice of the students is our voice. Their aspirations are our own. We are committed to building the Dhaka University of our dreams.”
