DHAKA: Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been awarded prestigious Doctoral Degree of Essex University, United Kingdom for her achievements in women’s rights and performance. 

The speaker was awarded with the degree at the university's silver jubilee and graduation ceremony recently. 

Pro Vice-Chancellor David Noel handed over the award to the first women speaker of Bangladesh on Tuesday. 

Essex University Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Forster and Director of Essex Business and Human Rights Project (EBHR) Sheldon Leader were present among others. 

Earlier, Shirin Sharmin Choudhury obtained PhD degree from University of Essex in 2000 for her thesis 'right to life'.
