DU teacher suspended over sexual abuse

DHAKA: Dhaka University (DU) authorities suspended Professor Dr M Saiful Islam, chairman of its Theater and Performance Art Studies Department, following allegation of sexual harassment a female student.

The suspension decision came at an emergency meeting of the Syndicate, the highest authority of the university, on Monday night.

DU vice chancellor (VC) AASM Arefin Siddique confirmed the matter to banglanews. The accused teacher has been temporarily suspended and served as show cause notice on charge of moral turpitude, said the VC.

Prior to the decision, students confined the teacher to the class room for two hours and his office for two and half-an-hour in two phases.

Accused Saiful, meanwhile, submitted his resignation letter to university registrar for sake of the investigation, which the VC confirmed.

According the written complain submitted by the victim, the teachers called the female student of sixth semester to his room on Saturday (September 13) on the matter of exam paper’s marking and tried to sexually harass her.

At one stage, the teacher opened the door of room as the student burst into tears.

Following the incident, the student submitted a written allegation and informed other teachers. Fellow students also began demonstration against the accused demanding suspension for lifetime.

Saiful, however, denied the allegation brought against him saying, these conspiracy has been made to frame him.
