Hunger Strike: 12 DU students fall sick, 4 teachers express solidarity Dhaka University teachers

DHAKA: Four Dhaka University teachers have expressed solidarity with the students, who are on hunger strike since Thursday, demanding DCCs polls reschedule as January 30 coincides with Saraswati Puja.

The teachers are Gobinda Mandal of Law department, Nepal Chandra Roy of Mathematics department and also a residential teacher of Jagannath Hall, Dr Mukul Kumar Baroi of Sculpture department, Faculty of Fine Art and Prof Jamal Uddin of Sociology Department.

They sat with the students on hunger strike at the base of Anti-terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture on the campus around 12pm on Saturday (Jan 18).

Twelve students of Dhaka University fell sick during their fast unto death till Saturday morning.

Two of them were admitted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Saturday, said protesting students.

Polling stations will be set up at different educational institutions in the city during the polls, which, many fear, will hamper the Saraswati Puja celebrations.

On Friday, DU Vice-chancellor Prof M Akhtaruzzaman also expressed solidarity with the protesters and urged the Election Commission to hold the polls on a different date.

Dhaka north and south city corporations elections are scheduled to be held on January 30, the date coincides with the day of Saraswati Puja.
