DUSU Election: Last day for filing nomination papers

Today marks the final day for submitting nomination papers for the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election.

Candidates will be able to submit their nominations until 5 pm.

Earlier, the deadline for collecting nomination forms was extended by one day, from August 18 to 19.

Several student groups are expected to announce their panels on the final day, with some lineups anticipated to include surprise candidates.

The first complete panel was announced by Islami Chhatra Shibir, which included students injured in July clashes as well as visually impaired students.

Left-aligned organisations have also declared their Resistance Council-backed panel, while the Students’ Rights Council has unveiled nominees for multiple positions. The Democratic Students’ Union has finalised candidates for its top two positions.

The Bangladesh Chhatra Dal (BNP’s student wing) has yet to finalise its panel but is expected to do so today. Other panels set to be announced include those led by Umama, Abdul Kader-Baker, Jamaluddin Khalid, and Mahin Sarkar, along with one backed by Islami Chhatra Andolan.

Beyond the party-backed panels, many independent candidates are also contesting. They include Shamim Hossain from the English Department and former Chhatra League leader Julius Caesar.

This year, 658 nomination forms have been purchased for the 28 DUCSU positions. 1,427 forms have been sold across 18 residential halls for hall union elections.

According to hall-wise statistics, Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall recorded the highest number of nomination forms sold (112), while Bangladesh-Kuwait Maitree Hall saw the lowest (33). Other figures include: Salimullah Muslim Hall (73), Jagannath Hall (74), Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall (86), Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall (100), Rokeya Hall (53), Surya Sen Hall (95), Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall (80), Shamsun Nahar Hall (42), Kabi Jasimuddin Hall (106), Muktijoddha Ziaur Rahman Hall (98), Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall (79), Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall (39), Amar Ekushey Hall (91), Kabi Sufia Kamal Hall (88), Bijoy Ekattor Hall (96), and Sir A.F. Rahman Hall (82).

Election officials have clarified that candidates can collect and submit multiple nomination forms. However, each candidate may contest only one position. If a candidate does not withdraw nominations for additional positions, all of their nominations will be declared void.
