After a 44-year hiatus, the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election has delivered a landslide for the Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed “Sampritir Shikkharthi Jote,” which captured 24 of the 26 central posts.

The results were announced at around 4am on Thursday (October 16) at the university’s BBA Faculty auditorium by the chief election commissioner.

In the top race, Shibir-backed Ibrahim Hossain Rony won the vice-president (VP) post with 7,983 votes, defeating Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) candidate Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, who polled 4,374. For general secretary (GS), Saeed Bin Habib (Shibir) prevailed with 8,031 votes over JCD’s Shafayet Hossain, who received 2,714.

The assistant general secretary (AGS) contest was the lone exception to the sweep: JCD’s Ayubur Rahman Toufiq won with 7,014 votes, ahead of Shibir’s Sajjad Hossain Munna on 5,045.

One of the remaining two posts not won by the Shibir-aligned slate went to a JCD-backed candidate; the other was secured by the “Binirman Shikkharthi Oikya” panel, election officials said.

Overall control, however, rests decisively with Sampritir Shikkharthi Jote following its 24-seat haul.
