A court in Dhaka has issued arrest warrants against actress and producer Meher Afroz Shaon and former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Counter Terrorism Unit, Nazmul Hasan, in connection with a case filed over alleged abuse and misuse of authority.
The warrants were issued on Tuesday (22 April) by Dhaka Metropolitan Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Chanaullah after the accused failed to appear before the court.
The case was filed by Nishi Islam, the stepmother of Shaon, who accused Shaon and several others—including former Detective Branch chief Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid—of physically and mentally abusing her husband, Engineer Mohammad Ali, in early 2024.
According to the case details, Mohammad Ali had posted a matrimonial advertisement and later married Nishi. Following the marriage, Shaon and her siblings allegedly reacted violently, reportedly subjecting their father to abuse and using their influence to have Nishi imprisoned for six months.
The court had earlier directed police to investigate the allegations. Upon finding prima facie evidence, the court initially issued summons to the accused. On the scheduled hearing date, two policemen from Badda Police Station appeared and secured bail.
However, as Shaon and Nazmul failed to appear, the court proceeded with issuing arrest warrants against them.
