Wear mask amid surge of Covid variant JN.1: NTAC

The National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Tuesday (January 2) advised people to wear masks apart from taking other necessary initiatives to prevent the spread of the new JN.1 Covid variant globally.

The suggestion came amid the surge of the new virus all over the world.

According to a press release, the committee came up with four recommendations in its 65th meeting held yesterday with Dr Mohammad Shahidullah, president of the NTAC.

The participants in the meeting discussed about the latest situation of the surge of the JN.1 variant and advice from the World Health Organisation (WHO) about the new variant.

Mentioning that the Covid-19 situation is under control and the new variant has not been identified yet in the country, the committee suggested taking precautionary measures including wearing masks especially in high-risk areas including hospitals and by individuals with low immunity.

It also suggested the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) strengthen surveillance by reviewing the global reports to monitor the infection situation and take necessary preparations for quick treatment including Covid-19 tests and ICU in case of emergency in future.

Besides, the committee also recommended screening travellers coming from abroad.

It also suggested making decisions about the vaccine through regular examination of scientific data and advised people with high risk to take 4th dose of the vaccine.

The meeting also suggested Covid test before any surgery if the patient has any symptoms.
