DGHS issues 7 guidelines to prevent COVID-19 spread

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued a set of preventive guidelines amid rising coronavirus infections worldwide.

Professor Dr. Abu Zafar, the Director General of the DGHS, also urged the public to follow these measures to curb potential outbreaks in Bangladesh.

He made the plea at an urgent press conference held at the DGHS headquarters in Mohakhali on Wednesday (June 11).

Dr. Zafar noted an uptick in global COVID-19 cases, with several new sub-variants being detected.

He emphasized the need for heightened surveillance and hygiene compliance at land, sea, and airports, instructing authorities to reinforce monitoring at International Health Regulations (IHR) desks to prevent the virus from entering the country.

The DGHS has advised residents to adhere to the following seven precautions:
1.    Limit public gatherings and wear masks when attending crowded spaces.
2.    Use masks regularly to protect against respiratory illnesses.
3.    Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or arm when sneezing or coughing.
4.    Dispose of tissues properly in covered waste bins.
5.    Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds using soap or sanitizer.
6.    Avoid touching your face—especially the eyes, nose, and mouth—with unwashed hands.
7.    Maintain physical distance of at least three feet from infected individuals.

For individuals experiencing symptoms such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, health officials recommend:
•    Self-isolation until full recovery.
•    Mask-wearing for patients and caregivers alike.
•    Seeking medical assistance when necessary, either at a nearby hospital or through helplines such as IEDCR (01401-196293) or the Health Center (16263).

Additionally, Dr. Zafar urged vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, the elderly (60+), and immunocompromised individuals, to receive booster vaccinations at designated centers.
