Dengue: 2 die, 392 hospitalised in 24 hours

Two more people died of Dengue in the past 24 hours and 392 were newly hospitalised across Bangladesh, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

DGHS revealed this in a press release issued on Monday (June 23).

Among the newly hospitalised dengue patients, 126 were from areas outside Barishal City Corporation, 80 from outside Chattogram City, 31 from outside Dhaka City, 22 from Dhaka North City Corporation, and 62 from Dhaka South City Corporation. Additionally, 25 cases were reported in non-city areas of Khulna Division, 41 from Rajshahi Division, and one each from non-city zones in Mymensingh and Rangpur Divisions.

A total of 260 dengue patients have been discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, raising the number of recoveries this year to 6,077.

As of June 23 this year, the total number of dengue cases has reached 8,150. Of the infected, 59 percent are male and 41 percent are female.

With the latest deaths—one from Barishal Division and one from Dhaka North City—the total dengue death toll in 2024 has risen to 34.

Last year, from January to December 2023, Bangladesh saw 1,705 dengue-related deaths and 321,179 hospitalisations—the highest on record. In comparison, the total dengue cases in 2024 until now remain significantly lower, but health officials have expressed concern over the rising trend during the monsoon.

From January to December 2024, DGHS data also noted a total of 101,214 infections and 575 dengue-related deaths, indicating that this year's outbreak could become severe if not controlled in time.
