Patient dies due to ‘negligence’ of United Hospital

DHAKA: An elderly woman has died due to the negligence of United Hospital in the capital, alleged her son Dr Ziauddin Hyder, a senior health specialist of World Bank.

While talking with journalists over phone from Cambodia, Dr Haydar claimed that his mother died because of unethical, illegal and hard decision by the United Hospital authorities.

Dr Hyder said his mother Mahmud Khanam, 75, was admitted to the United Hospital on April 12 in critical condition and later she was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. But the hospital authorities released her on April 14. Later, she was admitted to Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital but she breathed her last on April 23 while undergoing treatment there.

“Our family members, including five doctors, think that it was a murder. We have talked with senior doctors from home and abroad, leaders of human right bodies and lawyers, and they also declared it as a murder”, he said.

Dr Hyder alleged that the hospital authority forcibly released her mother while she was in critical condition and badly need of ventilation.

When contacted, United Hospital Chief of Communications and Business Development Dr Segufa Anwar said, "Our hospital is not a corona hospital. As the patient tested for Covid-19 positive, she was sent to the government-allocated hospital as per the government rules.
