Bangladesh reports first suspected black fungus death

A 'black fungus' patient reportedly died at a hospital in the capital.

The 65-year-old man breathed his last at BIRDEM Hospital while undergoing treatment three days ago.

He was tested positive for Covid-19 one month ago and was admitted to the hospital with post-Covid complications, said Professor M Delwar Hossain, head of Respiratory Medicine Department of BIRDEM Hospital.

Another patient with black fungus is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.

Earlier, Bangladesh reported two cases of black fungus or mucormycosis in patients who have recovered from Covid-19.

Mucormycosis or black fungus is a fungal infection, which is rare but can be fatal. In 50 percent of the cases, this fungal infection causes death.
