Mark Carney, a seasoned economist and former central banker with experience navigating financial crises in North America and the UK, is set to become Canada's next prime minister after clinching the leadership of the federal Liberal Party.

At 59, Carney assumes leadership at a critical moment, as Canada faces an escalating trade war with its largest trading partner, the United States. Last week, former U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods, sparing only the automotive and energy sectors. These tariffs threaten to push Canada's fragile economy into recession.

"Canada is not America, and it never will be," Carney declared to his supporters, emphasizing the deepening tensions between the two nations. His tenure is expected to be dominated by efforts to counter these economic and political challenges.

Before the announcement, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau energized the crowd, expressing pride in his government's legacy but warning of a defining moment for the country. "Democracy and freedom are not guaranteed, and neither is Canada," he cautioned.

Carney's leadership victory was decisive, securing 85.9% of the vote against former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former government house leader Karina Gould, and ex-MP Frank Baylis. His triumph marks a unique path to power, as he becomes only the second prime minister in Canadian history without a seat in Parliament—a situation he is expected to address soon by running for a federal seat.

Despite positioning himself as an outsider, Carney has long-standing ties to the Liberal Party, having served as an economic advisor to Trudeau. His strong fundraising, key endorsements, and a resurgence in Liberal support have significantly shifted Canada's political landscape, raising doubts about a previously anticipated Conservative victory in the next general election.

With tensions rising due to Trump's annexation threats, Carney has pledged to maintain tariffs on U.S. goods until Canada is treated with respect. He also criticized Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre as a divisive "career politician," arguing that unity is essential to winning a trade war.

However, Carney faces scrutiny over his corporate past, particularly his role at Brookfield Asset Management during its controversial headquarters move from Toronto to New York. Despite these challenges, his economic expertise makes him one of the most trusted figures to handle the unfolding crisis.

As Carney prepares to take office, former Prime Minister Jean Chrétien humorously suggested Trump should receive Canada’s highest honor for uniting the country like never before. "Canada will never join the U.S. No one will starve us into submission. Vive le Canada!" he proclaimed.
