An 8km long tailback was created on the east side of Bangabandhu Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail highway today (April 21) following pressure of vehicles on both sides of the bridge ahead of Eid-ul Fitr.
The highway witnessed the tailback starting from the eastern end of the bridge to Kalahati upazila in Tangail this morning (July 8, 2022), reports Banglanews correspondent.
While visiting the highway around 8am, this correspondent found that vehicles were moving slowly.
Police and commuters said increased number of vehicles on the highway due to Eid vacation has led to traffic congestion.
Excessive vehicular pressure, and some vehicles, which went out of order at various places including the bridge, hampered the toll collection occasionally, said sources at the traffic control room of Bangabandhu Bridge.
Truck driver Habib said, "It takes about 9 hours to reach Natore from Chattogram. But 23 hours gone, I still could not reach the bridge. I doubt whether I can reach today due to the traffic jam."
Bus driver Abdur Razzak said that it takes a maximum of 4 hours to reach Pabna from Dhaka during normal times.
"Leaving Dhaka at 9 pm, I've just reached here pushing the jam. There is no jam from Mirzapur to Elenga. But after crossing Elenga, I got into heavy traffic. I didn't see much police on the road, if there were police there wouldn't be so much jam," he said.
Elenga Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Zahid Hasan said that the traffic pressure on the highway has increased for a few days. Some vehicles went out of order at various places. Hope the pressure of vehicles on the road will be normal soon, he added.
