Mocha intensifies into a severe cyclonic storm: BMD

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) in a special bulletin has said the Cyclonic storm  ‘Mocha’  over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining area moved Northwards, intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the same area and was centered at 6pm today (May 12).

"The severe cyclonic storm "MOCHA" over Southeast Bay and adjoining central Bay moved Northwards, intensified into a very severe cyclonic storm over central Bay and adjoining Southeast Bay and was centered at 6am today about 1095 KMS South Southwest of Chattogram port, 1025 Kms South-Southwest of Cox's Bazar port, 1055 Kms South Southwest of Mongla port and 1020 Kms South-Southwest of Payra port", said the latest bulletin issued by the BMD today.

It is likely to intensify further and move in a North-Northeasterly direction, it added.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 74KM of the very severe cyclone center is about 120 KPH rising to 140 KPH in gusts or squalls.

Sea will remain very high near the storm center.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted distant warning signal no two.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution. They are also advised not to venture into the deep sea.

Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions,according to weather for next 24 hours begins from 9am this morning.

Mild to moderate heat wave is sweeping over Dhaka, Rangpur, Khulna and Barishal divisions and the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna, Sirajgonj, Srimangal, Sandwip, Rangamati, Cumilla, Chandpur, Noakhali and Hatiya and it may continue.

Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

Country's maxim u temperature on Thursday was recorded by 38.7 degree Celsius at Rangamati and minimum temperature today was recorded by 21.4 degree Celsius jointly at Bogura and Mymensingh.

The highest rainfall was recorded 53mm at Mymensingh for the last 24 hours till 6am today.
