The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (May 18) upheld the High Court order that had dismissed the writ challenging the legality of the process of election of Mohammad Shahabuddin as President of Bangladesh.

Besides, petitioner MA Aziz Khan, a Supreme Court lawyer, was fined Tk1 lakh for wasting the court's time.

An eight-member Appellate Division bench led by Hasan Foez Siddique dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by SC lawyer MA Aziz Khan.

Attorney General A M Amin Uddin moved for the state in the court.

On March 7, Supreme Court lawyer Advocate MA Aziz Khan filed the writ with the High Court challenging the legality of the process of the election of Mohammad Shahabuddin as President of Bangladesh.

The petition also challenged the issuance of the gazette notification that declared Shahabuddin President-elect and sought stay of the operation of the notification.

On March 15, the High Court rejected the writ. After that, Aziz Khan submitted the leave to appeal petition to the SC on March 21.

The Election Commission on February 13 declared Shahabuddin President-elect of Bangladesh.

Md Shahabuddin, also retired judge, was elected unopposed as the candidate nominated by the ruling Awami League.
