Armed robbers allegedly looted a jewellery shop in Lakshmipur on Wednesday (June 7) night, creating panic in the area, officials said.

The sensational dacoity was committed around 8:30pm in Samad Mor area of the district.

According to police and locals, around 8 to 10 robbers carrying weapons entered the area by a pickup van and blasted cocktails. Later they entered RK Jewellers and took away gold ornaments.

The dacoits chopped jewellery owner Apu Karmakar leaving him critically injured. They fled the scene within a short time, locals added.

After primary treatment, he was referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

The police rushed to the scene and started looking into the incident.

Police, however, could not yet confirm the quantity of looted gold.

Meanwhile a pedestrian was run over by the pickup van while they were fleeing the scene.

The deceased identified as Safi Ullah (60), a road construction worker, hailed from Ward 15 of Pashchim Lakshmipur in the municipality. Ismail Hossain (55) of the same area was also injured in the same incident.

The body was kept at the Sadar Hospital morgue while Ismail was sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

Besides, locals caught two persons from the spot and handed them over to the police.

Police said the two persons were involved in the robbery incident. They were kept in custody at the Sadar police station. However, their identities could not be known yet, police added.

The additional police superintendent of the district (Sadar Circle), Sohel Rana, said that the police are working on this incident. Two individuals have been arrested. During their attempt to flee by a car, an accident occurred resulting in the death of a pedestrian. After the incident, the police recovered several cocktails from the incident site and the surrounding area.

BAJUS district unit president Harihar Pal protested the incident and said: “Apu Karmakar was sent to Dhaka in a critical condition. The miscreants took away all the gold items from the shop. We demand a fair trial for this incident. We urge to find and bring the robbers to justice. We will discuss this matter with the central leaders and announce an action plan in this regard.”
