Bashundhara Group helps make women self-reliant

Bashundhara Group, the country's largest business conglomerate, has brought a refreshing breeze among the people of Sariakandi upazila in Bogura due to its initiative - Shuvosangho Training Center.

Ten women have been given sewing training at the center and each of them received sewing machines with the help of Bashundhara Group.

Shuvosangho, the social welfare organisation of Bashundhara Group’s vernacular Bengali daily Kaler Kantho, established the centre and donated the sewing machines in the upazila.

Kaler Kantho Editor-in-Chief Imdadul Haq Milan graced the occasion as the chief guest and distributed sewing machines among 10 destitute women.

Local mayor Matiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sariakandi Police Station Rajesh Kumar Chakraborty, Sadar Union Parishad chairman Abdul Kafi Mandal, Shuvosangho director Zakaria Zaman, its vice-president Limon Bashar, Shuvosangho Bogura unit advisor Mustafa Mahmud Shawan, and Bangladesh Protidin senior reporter Abdur Rahman Tulu, among others, were also present.

In his speech, Imdadul Haq Milan said “Bashundhara Group has been working for economic emancipation of the rural distressed women. Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan ordered the establishment of training centres in every district and even every upazila in this regard. As part of the ongoing scheme, we have launched the training centre in Sariakandi today. However, 10 women received training for two months. The recipients of sewing machines are expected to be self-reliant.”

About other social welfare programmes of Bashundhara Group, he said the largest business conglomerate facilitates education of the children of insolvent families by establishing schools and libraries and granting stipends.

Local mayor Matiur Rahman said, "The initiative taken by the Bashundhara Group to stand by the people of this backward area is truly appreciable. On one side, there is the Jamuna River, on the other side, the devastation caused by the erosion of the Bangali River, affecting the entire area. As a result, there is a higher number of impoverished and helpless people in this sub-district. I expressed my gratitude to the Bashundhara Group and Shuvosangho for their efforts to economically empower these people."

Regarding the demand for the establishment of a secondary school in the inaccessible island of Bohail Union in Sariakandi Upazila, he stated, "There is no higher secondary school in the five-kilometer area of that island. Setting up a higher secondary school there will help the children in that area receive secondary education."

The 10 women who received free sewing training as part of this arrangement, expressed their joy by receiving sewing machines as gifts from the Bashundhara Group as well as Shuvosangho.
