Pickup driver gets life term over 6 brothers' death in Cox's Bazar

A Cox's Bazar court today (June 11) sentenced a pickup van driver to life imprisonment over the death of six brothers in an accident in Chakoria of the district on February 8.

In the verdict, Cox's Bazar Zila and session judge court judge Md. Ismail also fined driver Saiful Islam Sifat Tk one lakh.  

The driver was present when the court was passing its judgment, said Public Prosecutor (PP) Foridul Alam.

According to the PP, as the case was too sensitive, the trial proceeding was fast.

After finishing every step within one year and four months, the court issued the verdict, he said.

According to the case statement, on February 8 morning, nine brothers and sisters went to attend their father's funeral in Malumghat area of Chakoria. While returning from there, a pickup van hit them, leaving five brothers dead on the spot and another was critically injured. Later, the brother succumbed to his injuries on February 22.

After the incident, Pallab Sushil another brother filed a case as the plaintiff with Chakoria police station. The court first ordered the highway police to investigate the matter, later it was transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).  

On February 12, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) nabbed the accused pickup van driver Saiful Islam Sifat from Madaripur.
