US Congressman and Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Gregory Meeks praised the remarkable progress Bangladesh has achieved under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina in the last 15 years.
However, he also highlighted that the United States also faces questions regarding its own democracy, partly due to the undemocratic behavior exhibited by former President Donald Trump.
During an exchange of views with Bangladeshi expatriates on the evening of July 24, Congressman Meeks expressed his constant contemplation on the human rights situation in the United States.
He emphasized that safeguarding human rights is imperative for every nation, and both the US and Bangladesh should work diligently to strengthen democratic institutions. A well-functioning democracy not only improves people's quality of life but also expedites overall development.
Congressman Meeks, a thirteen-time elected Democrat from Queens, shared that there are numerous success stories in Bangladesh. Over the past 15 years, the country has successfully transformed from an extremely poor nation to a middle-income country. The United States is proud to be Bangladesh's largest trading partner, and it has continuously provided uninterrupted USAID assistance to support the nation's growth. Despite facing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladesh has shown resilience and is increasingly playing a significant role on the international stage.
Congressman Meeks addressed the issue of the Rohingyas, underscoring that their plight remains unresolved due to vetoes from Russia and China at the United Nations Security Council.
He further stressed the importance of transparent and impartial elections in Bangladesh, praising Sheikh Hasina's unwavering commitment to this matter.
Congressman Meeks stressed the need for the participation of all political parties in ensuring free and fair elections, as the upcoming election holds crucial significance not only for Bangladesh but also for the United States. Upholding democracy and empowering the people's mandate is essential to counter undemocratic forces and pave the way for peace and prosperity in Bangladesh, he added.
Democratic Leader Morshed Alam delivered a welcome speech while presiding over the event.
Besides, Awami League United States unit senior joint secretary and Democratic Party's National Committee (DNC) member Nizam Chowdhury, President of the United States Sector Commanders Forum- Muktiyuddha '71 Lablu Ansar and President of the Bangladesh-American Democratic Front president Khurshed Khondker spoke on the occasion.
