The US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas on Thursday (August 3) reiterated that the USA wants free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh.
He told reporters after meeting with the Awami League (AL) delegation led by its General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
The US ambassador said, "I have exchanged opinions with other political parties, media, civil society, police, security forces, and I have done this as the American ambassador."
"I repeated the same message in every meeting that it is American policy to support free, fair and peaceful elections; No violence is desired by anyone," he said.
The government, media, judiciary, political parties, civil society, security forces, and of course, voters each have a role in the democratic process, the ambassador added.
Peter Haas in response to a question about the election time government said that, it is a matter of political parties, but the US is only interested in free, fair and peaceful elections free from violence.
AL Presidium Member Muhammad Faruk Khan, International Affairs Secretary Shammi Ahmed, Information and Research Secretary Selim Mahmud, Office Secretary Biplab Barua and Executive Member Mohammad Ali Arafat were also present at the time. An official of the US embassy accompanied Peter Haas at the meeting.
