Self-defense training for girls launched in Chattogram 

The Ministry of Youth and Sport (MoYS) with UNICEF support has delivered a training of trainers on Wednesday on self-defense to empower directly 100,000 girls to boost their self-confidence and ensure their protection, said Monira Hasan, child protection specialist UNICEF. 

“Since April 2022 UNICEF initiated for the first time a partnership with Ministry of Youth and sport to deliver sport for development and prevent through innovative approaches violence against children and women that according to MICS 2019 affects over 45 million children,” said Elisa Calpona, child protection manager.

“Chattogram represents a remarkably diverse scenario with children affected both from violence and from climate change effects like flooding and monsoons. Sport for development will ensure the protection and development of the most vulnerable children" said Madhuri Banerjee, Chief of UNICEF Chattogram Field Office.

The implementing partners are Shubarnarekha Ltd and Karate Do Bangladesh in collaboration with the Government of Bangladesh. Representatives from MoYS, Harun Ur Rashid and Main Uddin Milky, District Sport Officers from Chattogram and Cox Bazar have been actively participating in the ceremony and will be accompanying all implementation for a sustainable program. Jesmin Hossain emphasized UNICEF child safeguarding policy along the implementation.
