4 killed in 18-party-cops clash

LAXMIPUR: At least four people were killed and 30 others injured in a clash among activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, law enforcement agency and Awami League in Jhumur area of the district town on Thursday morning, the last day of week-long blockade called by 18-party alliance.

Of the deceased, three were identified as Shihab, 19, a passerby, Mahbub, 40, Laharkandi UP Ward-3 unit BNP president and Sumon, 27.

Witnesses said in support of hartal and blockade, Jamaat-Shibir men put barricade on roads in the area and blasted couple of cocktails.

On information, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) rushed to spot and fired bullets from shotgun to bring the situation under control which triggered sporadic clash in the area, leaving 30 people injured.

At one stage, Awami League men joined the clash.

Local sources said BNP-Jamaat men beaten an unidentified youth to death on suspicion of Awami League activist during the clash.

The body of the ill-fated youth remained lying on the road near to district jail, locals told banglanews at 2:30pm.

Later, Shihab died on the way to hospital and Mahbub succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Laxmipur Sadar hospital Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Fayez Bhuiyan confirmed the death of the two bullet-wound people.

On the other hand, at least five people received bullets injury in a clash between law enforcers and BNP activists in the district town at around 7:15am Thursday.

Later, district unit of BNP called dawn-to-dusk hartal for Saturday in the district in protest against the incident.
